THE LAST SESSION IS HERE

 WWW WITH BUBBLE:
Had a catch up with Makaore which was nice.
Discussed the things that I have mastered as well as the things that I have not.
Then chatted about our website upgrade and whilst we want to do that.
Need a 3 click rule - everything accessible by that.
Spoke about redirecting and web domains which Makaore said he can help with which is a bonus.
Having the mauri needs to be evident on our website as want to reflect who we are and the special character of who we are.

CONNECTING WITH MANAIAKALANI:
We used this time to provide feedback to the Manaiakalani team around our own experience with DFI - good reflection time also.

LET US KNOW HOW THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE DFI HAS IMPACTED YOU POSITIVELY:
I really enjoyed working in my bubble and found that Makaore was a wonderful support for us all - the patience that he has would make a saint proud.  Learning the tools and tricks for the google areas that I use on a daily basis was great as it just sharpened things up for me.  The things that blew my mind were probably harder to get my head around as I am no longer in a classroom but can easily see how I could use all of these features if I was.  It was neat to follow the kaupapa of Learn, Create, Share when undergoing new learning and to see how this would link back to the processes followed within a classroom.  I know that my staff will get a lot more out of this than I did as they are hands on but I am excited to know that I can just take my time and practise more things as I need them, remembering that GOOGLE IS MY FRIEND :)

ARE THERE ANY HIGHLIGHTS THAT HAVE IMPACTED YOUR LIFE, PRACTISE, YOUR WORKFLOW:
Really just streamlining how to do things as I was doing it one way but there are many other quicker ways to follow.  Learning how to have two windows open and working in them simultaneously was a game changer for me as was having different windows for my email addresses so that I no longer had a million tabs open - instead I only had the ones needed for each email persona - thank you Dave Winter :)

LET US KNOW HOW YOU THINK WE COULD IMPROVE OR DO BETTER TO SUPPORT THE NEXT COHORT:
I know it is called Intensive but at times there was language, terms etc being used that some of us were completely unfamiliar with and this was quite daunting at times especially if you are working at home by yourself.  It would have been helpful if you had a glossary of terms etc that we could refer back to - maybe a TIP chart as such - I know that would have been really helpful for me personally.

MANAIAKALANI OPPORTUNITIES:
Will be invited to a MK Alumni to still get help and advice
Keep the blog going - don't stop now as it is a great way to continue to reflect

Can also apply for the MK Innovative Teachers programme
Can also apply for the MK Google Class on Air - Term 3, Week 10
Could also be a DFI Coach - for online bubbles
MK pay the reliever to cover the bubble coaches
Tuhi Mai, Tuhi Atu - Write to Me, Write to Others - sign up to this as a vehicle for practising cyber smart
Toolkits online - Term 2 - June 1, 2, 3
Providing data to the research community - classroom observations, data analysis, moderation support, feedback, recommendations, implementation
Online practicum 2021 - Associate Teacher

DEEP DIVE:
Showcasing the slides that explain lots of things that we can do and use with students which is a bonus

WEEK 7 - DEVICES

 CATCHING UP WITH OUR BUBBLES...
- checking in with how we are going
- sharing the highs and lows of our weeks
- some of us had time for reflection
- some took time to review and revamp school sites, classroom sites which was sparked from working on sites over past few weeks
- I took time away to clear my head and prioritise our plan of attack which I found to be beneficial and I am feeling more refreshed which is exciting as felt I had lost my why
- development of our curriculum is happening so I have been having rich conversations around learn, create, share and effective and engaging pedagogy which really gets me enthused and fired up as this is essential for our taiohi
- discussed Week 9 to take the exams so that we could be registered - not sure I am snazzy enough to do this so will see how I go so hei aha :)
- talked about chrome books and i-pads for today and purpose of having them
- am excited about creating our new school site and disestablishing our current one to really reflect our kura, our taiohi, staff and whānau
- good idea for support is to have templates created so that people can then use them to make a start and they can personalise and have some ownership

UBIQUITOUS LEARNING ... Anytime, Anywhere and Any pace from Anyone:
Second to last kaupapa of MK
It encompasses the above definition
Removing barriers so that learning can take place anytime, anywhere, any pace and from any one - can learn outside the traditional classroom
Geography is not a barrier
Time is not a barrier
Place is not a barrier
And even any teacher as they can opt into classes online
Gives our students clear voice, choice and autonomy over their own learning - doing with rather than doing too
Pace is crucial also so rewindables and speed are necessary for learning also
Has been a goal for a long time
COVID kickstarted it and helped to make sense of the kaupapa around ubiquitous
Still huge emphasis on HIGH QUALITY LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Should be able to just carry on their learning even when teacher not there e.g with a reliever as if a teacher has planned effective, engaging tasks for the students to complete and work through then they just need to lift a lid
We need more hours also than the 6 hours we are given at school so that we can lift achievement and progress as learning can be revisited and revised out of school hours
Allows also for more exposure to language, conversation - increases their vocabulary
Typically achievement goes up during the school year and down over the holidays, especially the xmas ones
If our students stand still they go backwards but ubiquitous learning means we can address that slump - Summer Learning Journey

It has been discovered that students who participate in these do better when completing SOY placements and assessments which is a wonderful thing
Only participated in three activities a week - it was not full time full on learning
Technology is not just a tool, it removes barriers, gives solutions and new opportunities for learning - it needs to and must be transformative

REWINDABLE LEARNING - IF IT IS WORTH TEACHING IT IS WORTH CAPTURING, IF IT IS WORTH LEARNING, IT IS WORTH CAPTURING
- this can be done in so many ways, especially and easily using our phones

On reflection about our COVID journey:
What am I proud of?
- great learning just in time not just in case
- engaging
- creative
- lots of online meets with our students and their whānau
- collaboration from staff
- new learning for all
- be prepared before we needed to be
- creation of google sites for our outside schools
- running great learning compared to other kura that were better placed than us digitally

What do I regret?
- not learning more myself
- not taking time to enjoy the learning in front of me
- not spending more time in zui's

What have I taken forward into the 'new' era of schooling?
- importance of rewindable learning for those who missed the sessions
- that we need to have more learning online and accessible for our whānau hence our new journey with MK
- importance of creativity, engagement and just in time not just in case
- more sharing amongst our staff as collaboration is a strength
- maybe we switch our classrooms up and well as staff as having it online gives us the ability to do this

BEING CYBERSMART ...
This is embedded in MK goals
Supports the learn, share, create pedagogy
Empowering them to be connected and confident decision makers
Using really positive language to get this message across
Don't use terms such as Cyber safe, bullying and so forth
This was identified as critical and that a curriculum needed to be found to support being cybersmart
Important that the programme is intentional to teach them to be positive contributing citizens on the WWW
Need to be consistent
Modelling same language and behaviour

Many decisions being made underneath to help students to be cybersmart
Lots of things out there did not promote the positive language use but this is starting to change
- BeInternetAwesome is a great bit of learning for students and staff
Does take a while for the shift to occur and also some practise
10 categories identified:
- smart learners
- smart footprints
- smart relationships
- smart media
- smart surfing
- smart legal
- smart money
- smart values
- smart teachers
- smart parents
Personalised to our school and responsive to our needs
Needs to be:
- whole school focus
- planning collaborative
Intentionally teach:
- smart learners (learn)
- smart footprint (create)
- smart relationships (share)

Schools often have a annual cycle to teach these areas
They need to know that when they work together they leave a shared footprint
Teach importance of keeping passphrase safe so that they ensure chromebook is also kept safe
KINDNESS IS AT THE HEART OF THE CYBERSMART PROGRAMME
Authentic connections and interactions online and need opportunities to do this
Want our students to make confident decisions about what they share online
Use first name only - we are empowering them to know what to do and ensure that they know what to keep private and what they share publicly

Class sites - enabling our young people
Must be visible, ubiquitous, connected and empowered
Blogging and smart relationships go hand in hand
Cybersmart is a life skill and way of doing, not just a school focus
Meryn's role is to model this way of doing
Using her to underpin the design of professional learning whilst delivering this programme - models visible teaching and learning
Need to create some documentation for our curriculum and aligning with the mahi that Zoey has done so that we ensure all members of our school are safe online and are acting positively :)

KERRY - MANAIAKALANI 1:1 JOURNEY ...
Using own device means shifts occurs more quickly
Is important that students do have own device
This means we need:
- partnership - essential part of this, having a device and students and whānau knowing importance of this, kawa of care (living document), engagement through ownership.  Also partnerships with each other in all aspects of this - teacher to teacher, teacher to learner, learner to learner and so forth.

- participation  - empowered and have control over own learning

- protection - behind the scenes, Hāpara, partnership for filterings, visible digital learning for all parties involved

It is all about EQUITY and ACCESS
Providing best device for all learners
Move away from BYOD as it was as this in itself is a complication
Too challenging for teachers to implement

Starts in Year 1 - students using i-pads
Most efficient and useful tool to have in a classroom
Year 3 - Year 13 chromebooks
All need to learn and use the device well - learners, teachers, whānau

DIGITAL DIG ...
Chromebook simulator is the path that I used as did not have access to a chromebook
https://partnerdash.google.com/apps/simulator/chromebook#top-keyboard-shortcuts?l=en
Good helper for our students also so that they can learn shortcuts and skills
I used to be very good on a chromebook but now as I am a apple user I am out of practise but with time that will all come back and being in a classroom would bring it back earlier
Our son has a chromebook so I need to play around with his and see how I go

CHALK AND TALK ...
Screen castify
Very helpful tool
Can record entire screen for learners to explain things
Can pause or resume recording
End recording
Restart recording if you muck it up
Can change mouse pointer if presenting to others
Can also switch webcam on and off so that your face is not there all of the time
Can use the pen tool to show drawing
When you stop recording it takes you to this screen
Do not forget to label your recording
Automatically saves to my drive
Can share my link directly or can embed on my blog also
Very easy to share what I have on my screen
Free version has a 5 minute limit
Can pay for this but really not worth it as students will struggle watching for longer

IPADS ...
Ipads were introduced after other devices and brands were explored but these best fit the needs of the students and the MK kaupapa
All need to be set up the same
Accounts already logged in so students are not overwhelmed
Devices labelled
Distribution, collection and storage need to be thought about also
Expectations need to be revisited often over first few weeks so that students are aware of them all - kawa of care
Is a support site set up and has the lessons there for ipad users
whiteboard.explaineverything.com is a very useful app
When using this make them rename also - whiteboard name to what they are doing
Draw tool - can shade with and can also use a ruler
Can record on this also
Records all sounds as well - unless muted
Great to be able to rewind students learning for the task also as we can rewatch it once done at a later date
Slide sorter - right hand side
Can share as project, video and so forth or even as a link

Our task is ...

I really enjoyed using this app and found it incredibly easy to use and know that if I was in classroom I would use this a lot for modelling and so forth and the fact that you can keep it is awesome also.  This is my attempt ...

https://expl.ai/MDQJDCY is the embedded code for this also.
I signed up for this and registered as I see lots of potential for this and am excited about using it

HĀPARA HOT TIP ...
Workspaces
Used to see other workspaces which have been created by other teachers
Go to the Discover tab
Links to specific areas e.g. NZCF
See content created by NZ teachers
Grade 3 - Year 4 here
Can then explore and see what is there and can see if it is helpful for our learners
If want to use it click on copy on RH side, will copy entire workspace so that we can edit and tweak them for our personalised classroom
Info and recordings around this have been added to this weeks agenda

CREATE TASK ...
There are three options for us to choose from
Topic is cybersmart
We use the resources/lesson content available and repurpose for our learners
Choose one concept and create using that on explain everything, or screen castify or Hāpara and then blog that on here

Makaore spent some time unpacking castify with us as we missed the initial start to that presentation

We had a play as Makaore walked us through the process as it is an extension so learnt how to access that first and foremost.

To locate find the puzzle piece on omnibar if the orange arrow not there
Click on this to open
Gives you the option to show whole desktop so can move between tabs
Browser tab only or the webcam
Ensure microphone on and then can choose to select webcam or not
Then push record
Click on share screen and you are away
Stop by clicking on toolbox in LH side or on actually puzzle piece
Remember to name and it automatically saves in your drive :)
Magic
Then you can embed, share, download or even save as a VLC
This would be so good to explain things to all and they can rewind and view again at own space and pace
Could also use this for parent education evenings, staff hui and probably many other options that I have yet to think of or explore currently

BLOGGING TIP ...
Handy to see who has blog entries
Blogger should be bookmarked so easy to access, one click, one step only
Layout section - gadget - blog list - click on edit
Can add another classes blog onto your blogs also
Add gadget - right hand side - blog list
Open up gadget
Name it
Leave it on most recently updated
Can choose what shows
Click on add
Then add blog url's
Sadly do have to do them one at a time
Can rename to make it easier e.g. call one A and the other B
Do not forget to click on save
When refreshed they will be there
If they leave, click remove in gadget
If they enter, click add
Link lists are very handy also so that they cannot get lost as they all take the students back home

REFLECTION TIME FROM TODAY ...
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
How to screencastify as well as learnt about explain everything - both of these excited me and I enjoyed exploring with them.  I feel more confident about both of these compared to many other skills we learnt as these felt more straightforward for me personally.  Many of these sites, apps, extensions are set up the same so that too may be why I have found these easier as we are revisiting continually so it may be concrete now and learning consolidated.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The two areas above as both can be very easily used in a classroom setting and our students can also easily use both of these without too much of a problem - having them not be whakama about filming or using their voices will be the challenge.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Maybe the knowledge that I am becoming more capable in this world and with more practise I believe that I will get better.  It is just about using the skills and new learning and finding opportunities to do so in order to make myself.  That will be the challenge when I stop the DFI and become time poor again.  One of the many issues being a principal rather than a teacher where I can take this all back to my class and doing it with them the next day which is what I would normally do.

TOPIC FIVE - COLLABORATIVE SITES

CATCHING UP WITH OUR BUBBLES:
Discussed what has been working well, what we need help with and so forth.
To be honest I was a bit Manaiakalani saturated after last week so did not actually revisit anything as wanted to ground myself and spend some time on other areas of my school.
It is often hard as we are not in the same place as those who have started this journey before us and I really felt quite lost, disillusioned and frustrated last week on many levels so was disengaged.
This week I am in a better head space to reset and revisit and we will see how things go.
Personally I hate feeling 'lost' due to not knowing so many things - yet again we don't know what we don't know and having understanding of all areas at the same time is hard as this is not my world, not where I feel comfortable - don't get me wrong, I am into the pedagogy and all that lays behind that, it is the digital world and the multitude of layers which are involved in creating that 'onion' as such.  At the moment the onion is bringing me tears but I know in time it will bring me more joy.
Maybe I need to focus on the here and now and remember that 'Rome wasn't built in a day but a brick was laid every hour!'

CONNECTING WITH MANAIAKALANI - Pedagogy and Kaupapa: CONNECTED:
Being connected is closely related to share - it is a natural thing for us to want to do.
Connected is another one of the joists to ensure our whare is secure in all facets.
Everyone wants us to connect and collaborate, yet at times we are also isolated so maybe we don't connect and collaborate on every level.

Creating a powerful network with deep seated relationships does take time - the 3 year PLD is only the start of this.
Important to find people on same journey, page, stage and place so that we can support one another which is necessary if we are to reach our kura's full potential.
Shared language keeps us together - learn, create, share - all understand what these words are - even though will look different in each context, the shared understanding links us as well as helps us to achieve our goals.
Pedagogy programme design:
- Term One - ako (learn)
- Term Two - create
- Term Three - share
- Term Four - bringing them all together
Hard to untangle share and connected as you need connection to share
Connection needs:
- opportunities
- support structures
- time savers
These are designed to be followed to ensure that it happens and provides all that it is supposed to deliver.
The MK website has many links etc that we can use so that we can see how others connect and bring that to our own kura, cluster etc
RSS - enables you to gather together things on line and then dish it up to others - Twitter uses same concept
Helps gather together items, things and so forth in one place.
Hugely successful way for people to connect and find similar content
Once we have our schools sorted MK will set one up for us also so that our students can be a part of this.
Want to provide many opportunities for our students to share and connect ...

There are lots of spaces for this to happen, just need to investigate them all and see what best fits our students and purpose.
Toolkits online are a great way to connect with others and see what they are doing around the country.
Google + is now Google currents - another way that can connect others
All areas of the whare work together, they are not stand alone entities, they all need to be in place for our young people to what they need to learn, create, share.

When learning from home CONNECTED is a crucial element of this so that whakawhanaungatanga is maintained as not all home life and environments are the same.

LEADING LEARNING USING GOOGLE SITES:
- In a nutshell
- Learning needs to be visible
- Purposeful approach
- Our site needs to work for learners, whānau and ourselves
- All about us empowering others
- Want our learners to pick up what is happening in the classroom, just in a different location
- Also work at our own pace as well as asynchronously

Must have these 5:
- engagement
- teaching conversations
- cognitive challenge
- visibility
- scaffolding

Purpose of a google site:
- one stop shop for all learning all day
- accessible
- rewindable
- personalised using multi modal resources
- visible planning and teaching
- hub of information
- weekly overviews and timetables

Consistency across the board is important
May look different dependent on tool being used e.g. chromebook versus ipad
Visual appeal needs to be high - shop front window hooks them in
Decide on:
* theme
* layout
* fonts
Must be appealing
Plan page and content before we create it is very useful - mapping it out helps to see how it will work, a blueprint of the site
Only have 2 fonts maximum
Can also create icons to use as well

Functionality ...
- want it to be easy to navigate and access the site
- can use google slides and embed into the site so only have to update slide each week
- content straight on site (did this last week during multi modal session)
- Hāpara workspace and can embed into site as well
Enhances visibility on site
Can only access workspace if go into it, not on the site as such

Learners need to navigate from home page to learning page in three clicks or less - KEEP IT SIMPLE OTHERWISE THEY GET LOST

Ultimately follow this recipe and we cannot go wrong ...

Make sure also that classroom blogs are linked from school website which makes it seamless for all users despite where they start navigating from

EVALUATING CLASS SITES:
Click on links given
Have an explore and see what can be done, accessed and so forth
Then evaluate the visual appeal as well as user experience
Speak about what does not work well for visual appeal and user experience
These are real sites created by real teachers and we are working with their colleagues so be mindful of that
Be critical and honest but in a constructive manner

VISUAL APPEAL POSITIVE
- Buttons easy to identify
- Simple yet effective layout
- Use of linked images so also easy to know what is available without reading as such
- cool fonts and emoji's which all students will find is appealing
- I really like it when teachers are on page so you can see who they are and learn about them - helps with connectedness
- love that student leaders are posted on the page also - what awesome acknowledgement

USER EXPERIENCE POSITIVE
- one click away for everything so easy to navigate
- multi modal for differentiated learning
- learning still there for the year so can revisit as accessible
- WALTs and SC there so all students know what is expected of them and how to be successful
- learning real life - purposeful - clear and underpins the whole MK philosophy
- daily timetable visible
- like that the PB4L matrix/rubric on the PB4L page makes all expectations visible
- easy links on the page for students to go too

AREAS FOR GROWTH VISUALLY
- for some less is more, lots of things going on with the buttons, for me, use words or images, both an overload

AREAS FOR GROWTH FOR USER EXPERIENCE
- videos but no learning activity or purpose attached
- need permission to view a movie
- not a fan of not having all learning areas across the top rather than down the side like a webpage

Out of all of the pages that I visited and evaluated, this one was the most appealing and user friendly ... I could see this used at our kura with ease, being an intermediate also helped :)

EXPLORING AND EVALUATING EACH OTHERS SITES:
Similar process to what we just did with the other sites provided
Use that feedback to goal set for the rest of the day ... drives what we need to do to make our sites more accessible, visible and so forth
This is the the majority of our time - challenge for me as to what I need to do as want to create own site that is purposeful and meaningful for my own learning ...
- school site but not owned by myself
- learning site around our curriculum mahi but again not driven by me so much and Donna is way more cleverer that I am
... not sure to be honest
Our school site does need to be updated but also still kept professional as it is our school domain and is linked to our name, not sure by who as I do not deal with this

We definitely have a lot of work to do in this arena as our website is not engaging, current or visibly appealing as far as I can see with my little expertise in this area lol

Want it to be a clear reflection of who we are and what we can offer the taiohi of our area ... need to have a brainstorm with both Donna and Zoey as they are experts and can guide me in this process

Needs to be a ONE STOP SHOP type of site
Everyone must leave knowing all about our kura and no question unanswered - informative in a simple way
Also need to be up to date as ours is not - new charter needs to be on there as well as our strategic plan and so forth
Classrooms updated
Who we are updated - pepeha plus photos - more personable as that is who we are
We have the basic bones but need to put meat on the bones to pack them out
Classroom pages also updated for all as this is tired so again need to work out how as this could be a good work in progress - change fonts and so forth

On reflection I believe that once I have got the permission to get into our site I will be able to lift it visually and then have Zoey to support myself and the rest of our staff to do their bits and all of the other bits and pieces added in too such as PB4L, School Docs, Term overviews, important dates, and more ... it is endless

Manaakitanga is strong at our kura as we all use our heart so that needs to be evident on our site as it looks professional but cold :(

LEVELLING UP:
Goals for our website initially before we set up our proper one with Zoey doing the mahi so it reflects us as a school ...
1) Use a different font so that it is more inviting to look at
2) Get every teacher to update their class page with a photo, a peheha and some info about their class, culture and so forth
3) Do the same for all other staff members
4) Add in PB4L and SOAR as that needs to way visible from the get go
5) Go through and make adjustments to formatting and simple things like that so we look more professional
6) Get a blurb from Nicky and myself
7) Update charter and strategic plan for 2021
8) Ensure staff are named correctly e.g. kaiāwhina, mentors etc
9) Put school docs on with password
10) Add in anything else that is important to our kur

REFLECTION TIME:
  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

  • importance of connected
  • how it is linked to share
  • pivotal for online learning
  • give students as many opportunities for this as possible
  • another part of the whare that needs to be strengthen
  • all of these foundations, joists etc work intertwined so cannot use them in isolation or use some and not the others
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • just a bit more drive and enthusiasm around updating our website and then creating our own
  • know that I can work at my pace so that learning and understanding is consolidated
  • that for our staff the transition to this platform and all that google and Hāpara incorporate will be very easy for most as we definitely have the skills and expertise on staff thankfully
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

  • the importance of creating a workable site
  • visually is as important as usability
  • planning for this is essential, don't just dive in as then the site will be clunky
  • less is more I feel as the sites I liked were like that as we can have visual and icon overload
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

  • how to best set up a google site
  • importance of access as there are some things at our kura that only some people know and it should not be like that
  • all good things take time ... here for a sprint not a marathon

COLLABORATIVE SITES

 CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER:

In our bubble discussing what went well, what we still need support with and so on.
Nice to be in the same space as like minded people who are on the same journey as myself and our kura.
We all have different needs as well as strengths so supporting one another is crucial if we are to be successful.
The benefit that this has for our project and our kura is awesome and I am excited about that as well as working more collaboratively with my cluster colleagues.
I know that in our Taranaki cluster I will have a lot of expertise to call upon as both Mike and Perrie pretty up to speed with google sheets and that is where I want to learn more as feel it will benefit my staff as well as really help to identify learners and drill down more deeply in many areas.
As Jason said and Makaore reinforced - we are in it for the long game, it is a marathon, not a sprint and that is a great mindset to have.

VISIBLE LEARNING WITH DOROTHY:

Today's focus is all around visible teaching and learning
Learn, create and share are the floorboards
The joists - kaupapa words - hold it all together
- connected
- ubiquitous
- visible
- empowered
Visible - you can see it or you can't - anyone see it not just self
No barriers - seen clearly
Considering 4 different elements:
- visible to student, whānau, teacher and colleagues
The learning journey can no longer be hidden to students and parents - this is what has contributed to failings in the past
We do not want learning to be like a maze

Traditionally students were successful if they could read the teachers mind
This is not the way for many - CULTURAL CAPITAL
If our parents were successful at school they can share that with their children but this is not the narrative for all
Using WALTs etc has definitely opened up the journey for some learner
But we need to look at it more widely

Need to be generally visible to all
The child is at the centre
No longer a secret - no point in hiding it
Some things need to be private but the day to day functioning of the learning journey must be visible for it to be effective
Helps discussion then between whānau and their children also
THE DEFAULT IS VISIBLE
Using google sites does make a difference to learners - repurposing all of the normal paperwork experience
- mobile
- accessible
- available 24/7
- advancement before it is needed
- no suprises - @ the heart of our most successful experiences (different to engagement hooks)
Want to harness technology
Encompasses teaching and learning
Visible to everyone in the village raising the child - no passwords
Hapara makes learning visible to the teacher
- visible to learners
- visible to my colleagues
- visible to SLT
- visible to RTLB
Google sites makes teaching visible
All of John Hattie's work around this as it embraces and utilises the key elements that he has researched and promoted
Sharing own TAI process is also a way for our colleagues to share their journey and learning so that we can learn from what they have discovered
With technology we can put more barriers in place than with pens and pencils
Remove the unnecessary ones for all learners
We are removing equity
Such as:
- passwords - are they truly necessary?
We need a change of mindset and a change of approach
Reflect on this and how I now see teaching and learning
If the visibility is missing from the learn, create and share process then we are doing it wrong
Need to change how we do things so that visibility is there at all times

If we go back into lockdown remove all passwords
They are a nightmare and can be a barrier to all
Want visible learning to be a part of the digital age - change our approach

DEEP DIVE WITH KERRY - MULTIMODAL:

Key part of our site design
Linch pin to visible teaching and learning
Class site developed with pedagogical practises in mind
Purpose of multimodal is to deliver learning to our learners in a way that suits them and engages them at the same time
Everyone has their own preference
So many platforms now available for this
Differentiated approach
One size does not fit all
Can be done using a multimodal approach
- engagement
- personalised learning
- accelerate achievement
- empowerment

Want learners to be engaged, involved actively as per NZCF
Needs to be engaging in your own right
We are competing for time with our students as so many more interesting platforms so need to sell the love of learning
We have to manage how we sell this and be aware of audience as that is what we do want to grow
We ultimately want our students to 'buy' into what we sell as teachers
The window of our google site is our homepage and we really want to hook others into it
Contents need to be current, up to date - don't want it to be tired and outdated
Make the most of it - hook and draw them in
Owning a device initially for the first year will be an engager but if we don't sustain engagement they will use the device in the wrong way

Not a one size fits all
What engages one may not engage another
We want to them behaviourally engage
Then we want them to be cognitively engaged - extend and deepen learning

The power of a well designed site can deepen learning, engage with text, meet a wider range of audience
We have a rich learning context currently due to COVID so embrace this
Lifts the ceiling off of what they are learning, reading - increases critical thinking skills
Helps students develop ability to self scaffold

Be mindful of both of these
Make conscious choices as they also have an impact and can increase engagement especially if the content is word versus image heavy
Be aware of and move away from traditional to multimodal learning

Want to ensure that you hit the mark behaviourally and cognitively - in order to maximise learning
Refresh your site and content each year
Visibly rich in context and visually

Screen real estate - your homepage
Links to other pages
Hook students in
Portal for parents to come in and see what is happening in class
Can have a video of yourself as a teacher to introduce yourself
The options are endless

HAPARA HOT TIPS #4 VICKI:

At the top of the dashboard, third one along - sharing - very useful
Variety of different spaces we can see
Unshared - content in here is student files that have not been put into folders - often where missing work goes
Public - any files shared student work, anything on blog will be here
External - access to from outside of the domain
Deleted Docs - useful for finding MIA content - after 30 days it deletes automatically
All docs - most recent docs despite where they are they will come up as they are the most recent
Schedule time weekly for learners to locate files and put them in the correct places - tidy up of drive and put away where it needs to be - do at end of each term like you do with actual classroom

EXPLORE:

Back in digital bubbles and explore multimodal sites
In slide 19
Look at different examples
Have conversations about the thing that we notice and that teachers are using in their classrooms

What I liked:
- teachers photo and pepeha on site
- Calendar of day visible
- interactive
- have all the components necessary
- interactive and fail proof as all information for learning and lesson is there
- definite hooks visible
- many activities that will cater for all students as there is something there for everyone
- addresses all learning styles
- examples
- great graphics that are relevant to them e.g baby Yoda on one of them which piqued my interest and I am definitely not the audience it was intended for ;)
- clips which are beneficial to our learners and it is easier for them to connect to and with rather than having them read something plus this gives them the opportunity to revisit as they need as for some students it is necessary

CHALK N TALK WITH PHIL - GOOGLE SITES:

Paenga kūkara
Is a lot to cover so will be more like a deep dive for some
Have a folder set up in your drive with permissions set that all can view as all in folder have same permissions
Site plan - plan layout - do what works for you - pages, sub pages, themes and so forth
Can do digitally or on paper
This slide deck is on our agenda to use as a rewind
Your header is the most important thing as it is the first thing that people see when they land on your site
New site - sites.google.com
Plus button - click on that for a new site
First thing we do it rename it - FL google site 2021
Can change - title only, banner, cover and so forth
Can also change image - can select from gallery or upload your own image
Themes on right hand side - can change colour and font - determine buttons which come up later
Go to pages tab - on right hand side
Click on add to get these
e.g writing, reading, maths, cybersmart etc
If lost on site click home and it takes you back home
Home page - insert - scroll down - buttons - link to external site or internal site, insert link and then button comes up
Can edit these to remove if link wrong or it changes
Insert button - link to pages e.g reading and drag that up
Preview - click on little screen and see how it looks and then click on links to make sure that they work
X at bottom gets you out of the preview
Adding and embedding content has a few options
On homepage, double click anywhere and wheel comes up
Click on text to add text
Then double click, select drive, click on search button, type in timetable and then click and insert
Can also embed or upload from desktop then go to downloads
Insert from there and then can also add in text again
Can move things around
Can change background of section, can also duplicate it if want same content
When blue bar is across the section it means it is lined up and then when you move it it can centre itself if that is what you want
Can also create your own buttons - on slide deck - can use your students which engages them
Do that in google draw
File - paper set up - custom - pixels 200 x 200 and apply which means all buttons will be the same size
When download it only downloads what is in frame not entire sheet
Take a photo
Choose shape
Re size
Picture at back
Add text
Download as a PNG
Save into folder
Then upload and buttons all be there in downloads
Select all and then all will upload at same time in same size
If any part of shape gets chopped off click on un-crop and it will take it back
Then click on image, insert link and then click maths then click apply
Can shift section to the top if most important for students to see
Can colour match borders if have the extension colour dropper if you are a bit OCD
If using images make sure you have permission to do so
Can hide from header your pages - click on three dots and select hide from navigation
On pages then can add subpage
On page, three dots, add subpage and name them
These will show on home page
So have to add in buttons for them to be taken to the subpages
Link them
Remember to publish your site - click on publish - give you the URL and then who can view site - click manage and then select publish site, click on dropdown to public and select
Once it is published, every time you make changes you need to re publish so that it updates
Click on link and copy that to send it out to others
Use published site link not the omnibox link as that is editor view not published view
Can share with others to select them as editors so that they can contribute too also
In settings, select announcement banner to highlight upcoming events etc
At end of year, click 3 dots and duplicate site to use for the new year to build on work already done

EXPLORE - MULTI TEXT DATA BASE:

Angela Moala - TAI around reading using multi modal text
Started creating a data base available to all and everyone can edit
Different year levels across bottom of tab
Tabs show contributor, text, themes, reading age, complementary text (contains similar ideas to main text), scaffolding text (easier text to access similar information - level down), challenging text (reading level, different points of view), learner selected text, additional text and site links
Explore her one and see what we think - likes, wonderings and so forth
- liked that journal scanned so no book necessary as text available
- other text there to support and extend
- use of graphic novels as they often instantly engage our boys
- use of youtube clips - love that as reading doesn't always have to be books
- gives a multitude of options for all learners to engage with
- follow up activities also to pique interest more - based on learn, share and create and are not a worksheet yay lol
HUGE POTENTIAL FOR LEARNING AND TEACHING IN A MEANINGFUL AND ENGAGING MANNER - I AM A FAN ALREADY - AS LONG AS IT IS DONE RIGHT

LEVELLING UP:

Plan our own reading site
Using a shared jam board to do this mahi - I actually have no idea what one of these even are but am about to find out ...
Shared planning sheet where you can add text boxes, sticky notes
I saw how it worked and it is a good collaborative tool but for some reason I only had view only and could not edit myself which was frustrating
Participating in the chat was actually a switch off for me so my engagement levels were low BUT ... once I got into creating activities for the taiohi to learn, create and share I was away - Amy is going to investigate why I cannot edit and then sort me out so that I can have a copy of our shared mahi around this

This is the shared jam board that I helped contribute too :)

MAKING MEANING OF CONTENT - CREATING OWN MULTI MODAL SITE:

All going to be creating our own multimodal site - exciting
Can use what has been shared or can find own or ... can combine
As I don't have own class will create it for someone else to use
As I have never made a site before I opted in with Mark just to have that extra support which I probably will need lol
Mark is very experienced and uses sites more than anything else - can give text and audio at the same time
Being given a resource will help but I know that I am quick at finding cool bits and pieces to add in myself
Key advice - don't get hung up on precision and perfection :)

Opened new site
Renamed and created in DFI
Then change heading etc to title and then normal
Click on banner and then select image - change image - select image as have none on computer and put in what I wanted - ANZAC poppy and select and it will automatically insert it

Insert - all of the things that we can put on our site
Click on page - new page and insert
Name it
Click add to create more
Themes create look of site
Click a simple one
- text box
- images
- embed
- drive
Layout - whatever we select and it will sort like that
Double click anywhere on site and that gives option to insert the four above
Can insert videos in insert as well - scroll down to youtube and put the url in and select and it will do the rest
Add a text box in then also so students know purpose and so on
I found all of this relatively easy ... but I kept it that way
The opportunities are endless and have a lot of scope especially adding pages
Sites are just like google docs

To link to my blog - easiest way is to take a screenshot and then attach the URL with it
On their work then link to my name - control K (Could not find where to link this as I missed the first part aroha mai)

BLOGGING TIPS - LABELS:

Like a hash tag
Click on labels and will bring up all blog posts that have that

MY REFLECTION FOR THE DAY:

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The whole visible part - loved this and the multi modal element of this all.  This ties the whole learn, create, share pedagogy together for me.  I saw the importance also of how it is easy to differentiate learning which is awesome as it comes together with ease - so many opportunities for our students to learn and grow - and how we need to also work on their behavioural and cognitive needs - this for some of our staff will be the challenge.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

The real push for visible was great for me as we are working on our curriculum so all of these things align plus I have done work previously around John Hatties Visible Learning so this again puts my ducks in a row - I now just have to do the same with our staff and learners.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

The sites is a winner especially if we go back into lockdown as I now can too create some great differentiated mahi for our learners also which is great as it is all about collaboration.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

All of it as I had no idea about sites or Jam Board which I also liked.

And my URL for my site is: https://sites.google.com/manukorihi.school.nz/flanzacsite2021/home
