WORKFLOW - SESSION TWO - 17 FEBRUARY 2021

Session Two:

This session for me was far more fast paced than last time - this could be for a few reason, one being that I know the basics and figuratively 'I can walk comfortably in Google' but this work requires me to 'Run like an Olympic Sprinter' so I feel like I am playing catch up but I know with practise and as our time together increases I will feel more confident.

Here is my reflection for this session and then I will be adding in some more notes etc that I took to help me out when referring back to this learning over time.

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I really liked the emphasis that was placed upon and continued referred back to around effective pedagogy and teaching - this is huge for me and must be embedded naturally into all that we do if we are going to make a difference using analogue or digital approaches - the platform doesn't matter as much as the vehicle delivering the learning.

Without effective teaching we will not have accelerated learning so our staff need to recognise this.

The few slides I screenshot really resonated with me about this whole kaupapa so I saved them in order to reflect upon but also for me to be able to share with our staff as this has been the crux of what I am trying to push at our kura.

We are in an exciting time where we are creating our localised curriculum so being able to incorporate the Manaiakalani framework is ultimately going to support the learning of our learners - as well as consolidate good pedagogical practises for all of our staff so that we are ultimately delivering an excellent and equitable programme to all of our learners regardless of their needs and abilities.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Just how to tidy things up by grouping tabs, pining tabs and so forth as I am a tab fan and being able to use these tools will help my productivity I am sure.  I also am super happy that I know how to remove bookmarks as my predecessor had save many things that I don't even use.  I spent my lunchtime sorting this and will have to review the slides in order to master the tab colouring, labelling and coding as that went a bit too fast for me as I take notes to explain step by step so can miss things as cannot write and read at the same time.

I also feel more confident in being able to share a lot of what we looked at today with my staff to save me time sharing or photocopying weekly what's on etc - if we used a collective school calendar, those things could be recorded there instead but this is a work in progress so will sort myself fully first and then our staff second.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

 - using calendars more effectively

- bookmarking

- pinning tabs

- Google meets as last lockdown we used Zoom so this could be the tool we use in the future as well all have it

- shortcuts tips again, I am creating a list to share as most of our staff have Apples and any time saver is a blessing

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

How to finally add my personal calendar to my calendars as I can't add for some reason but have worked out how to rename so now my office executive and AP do not need to see when I get my hair done - this will be great for them.

OTHER LEARNING ... AND EMBEDDING :)

As I have said before I am a note taker, even with these cool new tools I will still use pen and paper as that is how I am - helps with my anxiety and OCD so it is more about my head than my capabilities.

The other learning that I felt was beneficial to note down was:

  • adding classes in Hāpara as I want to see all students learning and work
  • 'Takes 150 times to lose a bad habit'
  • That the framework of the house is MK but the inside is MI - empowering us to still do what we value
  • Learning and teaching must be intentional
  • RATE acronym - learn how to do this in a digital world which is exciting and for some of our staff, this will be a challenge
  • asking our staff what are their beliefs around effective teaching - foundation of our mahi
  • EFFECTIVE TEACHERS WITH EFFECTIVE PRACTISES IS THE SILVER BULLET
  • All google tools are effective and well worth using and learning
  • I need to explore Google Keep as this could take me away from my pen and paper habit
The activity that we did with our buddy in our own google bubble was neat and I enjoyed working with Jonathon and just chewing the fat about our experiences once we were done.  Again due to set up issues with my computer I was not able to record our work but Jonathon shared the one that he recorded of me so that I could practise embedding it.

I still cannot share my screen but we worked out today that I can share a tab so I will take that as the win of the day :)

Again I have had issues though and I cannot seem to embed and I think this is to do with my set up issues again which is really frustrating as this is what comes up on my screen ...

At least I take good notes to be able to go back once my issue is sorted in order to try again next week as I am really enjoying these challenges :)

  1. Kia Ora Fiona,
I commend your attitude to this new learning. Even though you're pushing past your comfort zone, you're finding ways to make it work for you, and enjoying the process.
I'm glad the effective pedagogy as the underpinning factor resonated with you. I look forward to following your journey.
