CATCHING UP WITH OUR BUBBLE:
Discussed what has been going well, challenges and so forth We also went over what we are looking forward to this week. Makaore also checked in to see if we had any other pressing issues that needed to be addressed or questions but thankfully this week we are all on the same page and place - busyness of schools at this time and we are all in the same waka.
CONNECTING WITH MANAIAKALANI - SHARE:
Share - Tohatoha - connected
Has been very much part of who we are in our current situation due to lockdown Helps remove isolation for many as we can still share and interact with others even if we are not physically 'kanohi ki te kanohi'
Sharing is not new, we have done it since the beginning of time
Instinct of human nature
Social media has allowed us to share with speed and amplification - things we now just take for granted
April 2005 is when our world changed noticeably with the introduction of Youtube, twitter, Bebo and so forth
Our young people wanted to be walking in this world
Manaiakalani realised that this was a real hook and could provide an authentic audience
We have always shared by that has been constrained by time, place and people but technology allows us to reach an even greater audience
The whole purpose around SHARE is ...
And the audience does need to one for purpose also Authentic is also those who CHOOSE to listen to us - as they do have the potential/power to move on
CONNECTED LEARNERS SHARE - POSITIVE, THOUGHTFUL AND HELPFUL - values of sharing and approach used
Share 1:1 - essential to wellbeing
Share 1: small group
Share 1: crowd
Share 1: the world
So why did we choose BLOGGER?
Many were trialled but BLOGGER won hands down
Functions like the other platforms they want to be on or are on Want them to learn to interact online in a positive way
We have to learn to be Cyber smart in real time - and we have the capacity to teach and reinforce this as our students start at 5
No longer are we 'finished' as they see it as a time to share, we need to allow them to experience really being finished as they can share to an audience
Students also need to know what finished actually is but the outcome of finished needs to be purposeful and valued
Finished can also spin off some learn learning
Learn, create and share is not linear, the share can stimulate more learning and creating and so forth
Feedback and feedforward is crucial for our students also Student voice is critical also
Important for adults to share also - gives our mahi a purpose as well - could do this for TAI - PGC also - use the same platform as our tauira
CHALK 'N TA;LK - GOOGLE FORMS:
Easy to use in a teaching role
Creating a form - URL follows same pattern as all other apps
forms.google.com
Blank one is good to use but there are templates available
Rename it for the purpose - Don't forget
Adding questions - number of different types
For answers - different options too
Duplicating questions allows you to save time
Required section is helpful if you are wanting to gain information and therefore people cannot move further on or complete/submit form without it
Can also add images and videos
Settings allow you to have control over your audience and so forth
Can use them to make a 'pop quiz' - quite fun and very American
Can also lock the chrome book so that students when doing assessments cannot open up other tabs or windows
Sharing and sending - send the correct link - crucial - send them the published link and click on the link icon
Summary shows you the answers and you can export that or put it into a spreadsheet using the spreadsheet icon
Can also have different sections in forms - can then view and look at different parts
Could use to gauge student attitudes
EXPLORE - CREATING A FORM:
Create one and have a play
Do one that you may use in the future - for us, Wellbeing :)
Learnt that you command K then command v to hyper link documents, forms etc to your name - who knew?
Have now managed to then link my form to my name for others to use
Also learnt how, in settings, remove the MIS only element from completing the forms which I will need to remember when I put out a form for our school to get voice of the whānau and so forth
HAPARA HOT TIP:
Hover cursor over the blog - see what they are working on
If it is in green, are draft
Dark grey are posted
Go into more and can see comments, hover cursor over them you can see full comment as well as the author
If comment is in red, they are not signed into account as such - maybe like whānau, not the students or teacher
DEEP DIVE - GOOGLE MY MAPS:
collaborative map which allows us to plan things and so forth
URL is mymaps.google.com or in drive under more
Create a map
Name your map immediately as we do with everything else in google
Can add layers to the map - different information in different space
Pin drop used to add a marker
Use that for places on the map that might not be recognisable places already pre-labelled - label it what you want and save it
Can also draw lines and connect them to markers
Click enter which saves the line
Lines can also be used to work out land area - good for Maths
Directions - help us get from A to B
Ruler can be used to measure km but it does not stay, is temporary - to keep it use the line instead
Can change the base map and can change to satellite view or terrain view - more topical
Can share map with specific people or anyone with the link
Can edit points, add in detail, videos, photos etc
Can also import data
Click on import function - to drive - link to spreadsheets and then choose what information we want to have as the place marker - shows as a layer on the map
Will then put that information on the map and even show your selfie when you click on the link from the information in the spreadsheet
Can change colour and style of the marker icon
Very exciting for classroom teachers and this has huge potential for sharing the world to our students with limited experiences - dream big
- pepeha
- local street names and their histories
- our holiday destinations
To share on blog - thee dots - imbed - HTML comes up, copy and then embed
EXPLORING MY MAPS:
What will it be on our map?
Purposeful and meaningful
Can use shared data and layer that - favourite places, best holiday destinations, where my whānau are from?
Different to Google Maps, more about creating own maps
I KNOW THAT I SHOULD HAVE EMBEDDED THIS BUT AS I WAS WORKING SMARTER I HAD ADDED THE AGENDA FOR THE DAY ONTO MY BLOG AND WHEN I WENT TO EMBED MY MAP CONTINUED TO BE PLACED AT THE END AND SO I THOUGHT A SCREEN SHOT WOULD BE SUFFICE. NEXT WEEK I WILL BE PREPARED FOR SUCH EVENTS :)
DEEP DIVE - GOOGLE SHEETS:
Can resize content of all cells by highlighting them all
Click on the more button
On the sigma button and can select what you want to add up, click enter and it will do it for you
Sheets will ask if you want it to autofill - as a suggestion
Autofill - hover mouse, becomes a + and then drag down and it will do them all - quick and easy
Can do this for total, average - select columns but don't add in the total as it puts the average as an incorrect amount
Can highlight column and choose your formatting to how you want it - NZ over USA - more formats - can personalise
Important to have it on 'PLAIN TEXT' when working with numbers so that it does not drop some of them off
More ... filter funnel - click on that - green around edge, can then filter data and select exactly what you want, gender, year group and so forth
Can then save that data as a filter view - pick out what you need from main data
Using autofill saves time for putting in months, days of week, numbers - put in first few and it picks up the pattern
* means x by in sheets
Can get 'spark lines' to show growth etc over time for each student - visual
If select entire sheet, into edit and then can pick colours - alternating etc
Format, conditional formatting, select all, can set up rules - if values less that 4 highlight it to go to red, automatically does that so you can see who needs support - can add more rules, greater than 7 in green - see who is at or above expectations
Can also sort them alphabetically by highlighting and going into data option and won't lose data, can also do numerically
Go back to SETTING UP SHEETS and they will be able to give us step by step support so that we can go back and review these as there was A LOT going on with also lots of speed

Select gender, age or etc and then save/rename that filter and can do this to manipulate with all filters and so forth
Then click x to remove filters, goes back to original and then from that click the filter button which will show you all of the filters that you have applied
This has a huge amount of potential for me when analysing data but I definitely require more time to work on this as I do not feel as yet I would get the best amount of learning or analysing to create where to next and so forth currently
ANALYSING DATA FROM STUDENT BLOGS: Go into blog and then archive Import data
Customise and select correct graph
Do in google draw
As it is in google sheets it will automatically update
Highlight area from data (blog)

Can do the same for totals and so forth with more data
Then click on graph - three dots
Select to publish and then embed
Open up google draw
New document
Click insert - click on chart and then go through that process
MAKE SURE YOU CLICK ON GRAPH TO ACTIVATE THE IMPORT - Rookie mistake
As it is linked to the spreadsheet so whatever changes made to original will be made to the other one
To get a spark line
Click on data
Then put in = and start writing SPARK and it comes up
THESE ARE AWESOME AND SHOW PROGRESS ETC WITH A QUICK GLANCE
WRITING QUALITY BLOG COMMENTS:
Can get notifications from people commenting on your blogs - this is in settings
Go into settings, add admins/authors so that you can still access your blog if your leave your school
Can use HTML codes and comments when you comment on other people's blogs
Good for us to go and see others blogs as well as see how they are set up
DON'T FORGET THAT ONLINE TOOLKITS ARE AVAILABLE FROM NEXT WEEK - IN ORDER TO UP SKILL MYSELF IT IS IMPORTANT THAT I SIGN UP TO SOME OF THESE

COPY LINK, THEN HIGHLIGHT NAME (OR HEADING ETC, DEPENDS ON WHAT WE ARE DOING) THEN COMMAND K AND THEN COMMAND C OF LINK WILL LINK THE TWO - AWESOME WEE TRICK OF MY NEW FOUND WORLD
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
- that we have always shared since the start of time'
- digital sharing widens and strengthens both audience and purpose
- learn, share and create are not linear, often share can lead to new learning
- students really need to know what 'finished' means as often they don't
- our new world starting changing in 2005 so we all need to be on the ever evolving waka
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
- google maps was awesome and it can have so much potential for learning in a classroom
- I love analysing data and google sheets with it's algorithms, filters and tools will be a game changer for me and you can extract data with the ease
- being able to then also embed graphs in drawing and that the changes you make to initial spreadsheet will transfer over is wonderful too as we are all busy so to maximise output with minimal input and get multi purposed information will be really helpful for me
What did I learn that could be used with my learners, how could they use
- my staff are my learners so sharing the spreadsheets learning with them will be awesome
- I also have one staff member who is doing a great unit around financial literacy for his Tūhura project so I am really excited to share maps and spreadsheets with him
What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
- having two windows open today and blogging as I went has definitely saved me time today and I get to enjoy my afternoon as it is 'WELLBEING WEDNESDAY' so I can fill mu bucket also - ngā mihi nu nui
Kia ora Fiona,
ReplyDeleteWOW! That was one in-depth blog post! I am sure your notes will be helpful for you if you need to revisit any of the content from the day. Ctrl K to insert a link is such a great trick - and works on images as well as text! I'd love to hear more about the financial literacy your teacher is doing.
Ngā mihi nui
